PFLITSCH customer case study: how LED lighting systems can positively effect plant growth
In order to thrive, plants need suitable soil, sufficient water and the right kind of light. PFLITSCH customer DH Licht specialises in the latter. This medium-sized company can even simulate the passage of the sun across the sky and the lighting conditions of specific regions of the world with its latest development in LED lighting technology.

Made in Germany – a serious matter
Holger Dinter follows his own very special philosophy: "For us, 'Made in Germany' is no empty slogan: we consider high quality for our products manufactured here in Germany to be absolutely essential." Consequently, all his suppliers are based and his lights are manufactured in Germany. Furthermore, the DH Licht boss likes to set a good example and not ship in components from all over the world. He is certain: "The same applies to food production if we wish to create the right kind of environment for good growth. We are therefore working on new technologies for the variable lighting of plants."
Modern LED technology makes the sun shine.
With the latest generation of LED-KE 300 lamps, DH Licht is firmly focused on LED technology that can simulate – through a combination of lighting that can be dimmed and changed in colour – the passage of the sun and the lighting conditions, for example, in Mexico's mountainous regions. "These lamps give producers and researchers the possibility, for the first time, to change the growing conditions of the young plants," explains Holger Dinter – completely without the use of chemicals or genetic engineering. Researchers can precisely influence leaf size, taste, crispiness etc. using light. "Blossoming time can also be fully controlled," says Holger Dinter.
More than 300 LEDs provide the full range of colour spectrums.
DH Licht has designed an extruded aluminium housing with an integrated heat sink for the LED-KE 300 to keep the temperature inside the lamp at an optimum +20 °C. The lamp has four integrated LED chip boards with more than 300 LEDs. The four power control units are contained in a separate aluminium housing. "With this variable approach to design, we can react better to each specific installation situation," says Dinter. The two components are connected by data and energy cables.

To feed these cables safely and reliably into the aluminium housing, DH Licht has opted for PFLITSCH's high-grade UNI Dicht® cable glands. With their nickel-plated brass cable gland body and TPE sealing inserts, they can be relied upon to provide high IP 68 ingress protection, superior strain relief and a long service life. "That must be the case, because I haven't received a complaint in years," says Holger Dinter with a chuckle. The compact M12 covers cable diameters of 4.0 to 6.5 mm.
PFLITSCH has a pressure compensation element in its range of products, which sits between the two cable glands in this product. "This became necessary because leakage tests should that a vacuum was created when the hot housings cool down," says Holger Dinter.
