Uncompromising safety – for the most demanding requirements on the high seas

Modern surface and submersible vessels are now equipped with highly complex electronics – ranging from radar and communications systems through propulsion technology to fire control systems. Thousands of cable entries ensure that power and data are transmitted safely. However, salt water, severe vibrations and electromagnetic interference place extreme demands on every component.

Where reliability is a safety-critical factor, uncompromising quality is essential – and this is precisely where PFLITSCH offers cable glands developed specifically for the naval sector.

The new standard: VG 88846-4

Since July 2022, the new defence equipment standard VG 88846-4 ‘Cables and wire entries – Watercraft’ has applied to all newly commissioned ships and submarines of the German Navy.
It sets new standards in terms of types of protection, EMC safety and material durability. Developed under the leadership of WTD 71 and based on EN 62444, it represents the current state of the art.

This standard is linked to a clear market requirement: only certified products may be used. And PFLITSCH is currently the only manufacturer to offer a cable gland that fully complies with this standard – the blueglobe TRI NM/Cr.

Our solution: PFLITSCH blueglobe TRI NM/Cr

blueglobe TRI NM with marine thread

The PFLITSCH blueglobe TRI NM/Cr is the first and, to date, the only EMC cable gland certified to VG 88846-4. It is listed by the German Armed Forces and NATO and meets all requirements well beyond the standard:

  • Direct EMC protection provided by a non-magnetic triangular spring made of CuSn6 (bronze)
  • No shield interruption – maximum attenuation values (65 dB up to 1 GHz, 50 dB up to 1.5 GHz)
  • Type of protection IP 68 up to 15 bar / IP 69 K, i.e. well above the required IP 56
  • Strain relief up to Class B (EN 62444)
  • Operating temperatures from –33 °C to +90 °C
  • Installation time savings of up to 15 minutes per fitting
  • Highest resistance to vibration and salt spray

For applications without EMC requirements, the blueglobe Cr is available with metric or marine threads – also tested in accordance with VG 88846.

The blueglobe TRI NM/Cr sets the benchmark for electromagnetic safety and sealing in the defence sector.

100% secure assembly – quick and fail-safe

The assembly of the blueglobe TRI cable gland is not only particularly straightforward, but also completely reliable – even under extreme conditions. Typical of PFLITSCH: the EMC-compliant bonding is established automatically and does not need to be checked manually.

Thanks to its innovative design, the screening is mechanically separated from the seal – a crucial advantage, particularly for cables with multiple layers of screening. The installation process is incredibly simple: the cable sheath is simply stripped away at the contact point, and the exposed screening braid can be effortlessly fed through the cable gland. The triangular spring immediately and securely wraps around the braid, ensuring effective EMC protection even before the pressure screw is tightened.

The blueglobe TRI contact system has proven to be consistently functional throughout the entire approval process – even after intensive salt spray and vibration tests.

Another technical advantage is that during assembly, the shielding is not interrupted but continues uninterrupted. This keeps the RF termination resistance constant – a clear advantage over conventional conical cable glands, where heat-shrink tubing can cause sealing problems and make installation more labour-intensive.

In practice, this also pays off financially: customers report potential time savings of up to 15 minutes per cable gland – a real efficiency gain for every installation.
