special product solutions from PFLITSCH for the railway industry

The aspect of fire protection plays a crucial role in railway technology when it comes to the matter of transporting people safely. In dangerous situations such as a fire, all installed components must make a reliable contribution to the safety concept. Selecting suitable components delays the spread of a fire. The focus is on ensuring the railway vehicle remains operational for a certain period of time to allow the passengers to be evacuated.

Fire protection standard EN 45545-2: What are the requirements?

EN 45545-2 contains requirements relating to fire protection in railway vehicles that are mandatory for the whole of Europe. This material testing standard sets out the fire safety requirements for the materials used in railway vehicles. It defines a number of classifications of hazard level. which take into account the operation and design categories of the railway vehicle. A fully occupied train (design category D) is classified differently to an unoccupied wagon (design category A). The operation category relates to the place of operation (open track, track with tunnels). The hazard level (HL1….HL3), which describes the effect of fires (heat development, reduction of vision by smoke, lack of oxygen and the generation of toxic gases), is derived from the combination of these two pieces of information.

What is the significance for cord grips of the fire protection standard EN 45545?

In the case of cord grips made of metal, the fire protection standard applies only to sealing inserts. The cord grip bodies of plastic cord grips have to fulfil these requirements. Self-extinguishing materials are specified in every case to prevent a major fire incident. Standard cord grips manufactured by PFLITSCH are internationally certified by VDE, CSA and UL and their behaviour in fire has been subject to tests in accordance with the standards for many years.

The sealing inserts for PFLITSCH cord grips withstand high temperatures

Every day, the installed components have to withstand not only mechanical loads from vibrations, stone impact and dust but also the effects of the weather and temperature fluctuations. This places stresses on the cord grip body and the sealing insert. The latter has a special role to play in the event of a fire. Sealing inserts are an important element in achieving "integrity" for PFLITSCH cord grips (EN 45545-3).
PFLITSCH's T80s material for sealing inserts and the polyamide in UNI Flange cord grips are suitable for unrestricted use in trains. The sealing inserts made out of S55 are tested for the extreme temperatures of -55 °C and +180 °C with respect to their behaviour in fire. They can also be used in extreme climatic conditions and meet the requirements of the highest hazard level HL3 in EN 45545-2.

Product solutions from PFLITSCH at a glance

Products from PFLITSCH are notable for their availability in many versions. This is certainly the case in fire protection: various product series can be designed to suit the different demands of the passenger transport industry.

blueglobe fire protection cord grips

blueglobe fire protection cord grips are available in various versions for use in a wide range of applications: the blueglobe TRI fire protection cord grip with a sealing insert made of T80s is available in sizes M12 to M63 in brass and stainless steel. It achieves excellent HF screening attenuation values and has been successfully tested in accordance with the latest fire protection standards EN 45545-2 and EN 45545-3. The new PFLITSCH T80s material for sealing inserts meets the highest requirement, hazard level HL3, of the new EU standard for unrestricted use in trains. Its triangular spring makes 360° contact with the screening braid. The blueglobe TRI fire protection cord grip sets the standard for screening attenuation. One version – the blueglobe TRI with seal inserts made from silicone S55 – is available for high temperature ranges and with a long connection thread. The blueglobe fire protection cord grip is also available in a version without the triangular spring – for applications where there is no requirement for EMC.

UNI Dicht fire protection cord grip

The UNI Dicht product series is notable for features such as high ingress protection types, operational reliability and durability. The sealing insert can be selected to suit the area of application and therefore the product series offers a great deal of flexibility. The UNI Dicht fire protection cable gland is available in brass and stainless steel (as well as with a standard or a multiple sealing insert).

Split systems: UNI Split Gland and UNI Flange

Thanks to special single and multiple fire protection sealing inserts, it is possible to feed through preassembled cables quickly and easily using the UNI Split Gland and UNI Flange split cord grip systems. These have been tested for their fire resistance in accordance with EN 45545-3. As a result, preassembled cables may be used without restriction in the railway industry. UNI Split Gland is produced in polycarbonate and diecast zinc versions. UNI Flange is available in PA plastic and in diecast zinc.
PFLITSCH's split systems are among the best and most installation-friendly cable gland products on the market, from which our customers benefit worldwide.
