The use of components in potentially explosive atmospheres, for example in the chemical, pharmaceutical or food industries, agriculture, woodworking and the metal industry, is governed by strict regulations.
The extensive portfolio of cable glands for explosion protection from PFLITSCH offers safety you can rely on as all Ex cable glands are certified according to the current ATEX directive. “ATEX” (ATmosphères EXplosibles) stands for the European Directive 94/9/EC, which regulates the placement on the market of explosion-proof, electrical and non-electrical equipment, components and protective systems.
Reliable certified protection in potentially explosive atmospheres: G (gas), D (dust)
Ignition protection types: Ex e, Ex d and Ex t
High tightness with protection classes IP 66, IP 68 to 10 bar or 15 bar respectively
Above-average strain relief

The ignition protection type is an essential criterion for the design of electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres. The aim is to minimise the risk posed by an explosive atmosphere and ignition sources being present at the same time.
PFLITSCH Ex cable glands are approved for ignition protection type “e” (increased safety) to prevent sparks and excessive temperatures and for ignition protection type “d” (flameproof enclosure), which prevents the transmission of an explosion to the outside. The dust ignition protection type “Protection by enclosure t” is met with a high IP protection class according to EN 60529 and by limiting the surface temperature of the enclosure to a value at which a dust cloud or deposited dust is not ignited or capable of smouldering.
Potentially explosive areas in which hazardous substances such as dusts and gases occur are differentiated according to the frequency of occurrence. To this end they are classified in Ex zones. PFLITSCH Ex solutions meet all requirements for use in the following Ex zones:
Zone 0 – constant, prolonged or frequent occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture
Zone 1 – occasional occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture
Zone 2 – rare occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture
Zone 20 – constant, prolonged or frequent occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture
Zone 21 – occasional occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture
Zone 22 – rare occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture
Extreme caution and care are required where a highly sensitive topic such as explosion protection is concerned. We recommend that you always consult a PFLITSCH customer adviser or one of our sales partners. They are also able to tell you which ATEX certifications are available for the Ex cable glands you need. Depending on the size of the gland and the material from which it is made, there are differences that must be taken into account during your project planning.
LevelEx – the compact Ex-d cable gland from PFLITSCH
With the new LevelEx cable gland, PFLITSCH has developed a pioneering Ex cable gland for “Ex d” and “Ex e” applications. It has minimum dimensions for space-saving installation and maximum safety: the LevelEx complies with protection class IP 66 or IP 68 and corresponds to the protection types flameproof enclosure “Ex d” and increased safety “Ex e”. The LevelEx consists of just four parts, which are simple and safe to assemble. A clever feature: the sealing elements have a captive design and cannot be lost during assembly.
LevelEx – convincing features include the temperature range and certification
The LevelEx is available in sizes M16 to M75 with NPT threads from 3/8" to 2 ½" and nickel-plated brass and stainless steel gland bodies. Its large sealing range allows cables from 7 mm to 66 mm to be securely sealed. And thanks to a wide temperature range from –60 °C to +130 °C plus international certifications such as ATEX and IECEx, it can also be used under extreme conditions without any problems. During pressure resistance testing the LevelEx met the minimum requirement of 30 bar/10 sec. It was tested at a test pressure of 48.6 bar, which corresponds to use at an operating temperature of –60 °C.
As a full-range supplier, not only do we offer a comprehensive cable gland programme, we also have a range of Ex accessories comprising everything from Ex adapters, Ex reductions and Ex blind plugs to EMC adapters and Ex breather drains.
In potentially explosive atmospheres a large number of factors such as the hazardous substances (gas, dust, vapours) and the electrical equipment present determine the potential risk of an explosion. To minimise the risk, the cable gland used must be precisely designed for these requirements.
Flour and dust in production environments in the food and pharmaceutical industries can also create potentially explosive atmospheres. If Ex cable glands with direct product contact are used in production processes, they must also be hygienic to rule out any risk of contamination.
The ignition protection type describes the design principles an electrical component must have to ensure safe operation in a specific potentially explosive atmosphere or to prevent an explosion. PFLITSCH Ex cable glands are approved for ignition protection type “e” (increased safety) to prevent sparks and excessive temperatures, for ignition protection type “d” (flameproof enclosure), which prevents the transmission of an explosion to the outside and for dust ignition protection type “Protection by enclosure tD”. Other ignition protection types include oil immersion, encapsulation and pressurised enclosure.
