PFLITSCH cable glands for potentially explosive atmospheres

Maximum safety in potentially explosive atmospheres

The use of components in potentially explosive atmospheres, for example in the chemical, pharmaceutical or food industries, agriculture, woodworking and the metal industry, is governed by strict regulations.

The extensive portfolio of cable glands for explosion protection from PFLITSCH offers safety you can rely on as all Ex cable glands are certified according to the current ATEX directive. “ATEX” (ATmosphères EXplosibles) stands for the European Directive 2014/34/EU, which regulates the placement on the market of explosion-proof, electrical and non-electrical equipment, components and protective systems.

Ignition protection types

The ignition protection type is an essential criterion for the design of electrical equipment in hazardous areas. The aim is to minimise the risk posed by an explosive atmosphere and ignition sources being present at the same time.

PFLITSCH explosion proof cable glands are approved for ignition protection type “e” (increased safety) to prevent sparks and excessive temperatures and for ignition protection type “d” (flameproof enclosure), which prevents the transmission of an explosion to the outside. The dust ignition protection type “Protection by enclosure t” is met with a high IP protection class according to EN 60529 and by limiting the surface temperature of the enclosure to a value at which a dust cloud or deposited dust is not ignited or capable of smouldering.

Ex zones

Potentially explosive areas in which hazardous substances such as dusts and gases occur are differentiated according to the frequency of occurrence. To this end they are classified in Ex zones. PFLITSCH Ex solutions meet all requirements for use in the following Ex zones:

  • Zone 0 – constant, prolonged or frequent occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture

  • Zone 1 – occasional occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture

  • Zone 2 – rare occurrence of a flammable (gas, mist, vapour) mixture

  • Zone 20 – constant, prolonged or frequent occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture

  • Zone 21 – occasional occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture

  • Zone 22 – rare occurrence of a flammable (dust) mixture

Extreme caution and care are required where a highly sensitive topic such as explosion protection is concerned. We recommend that you always consult a PFLITSCH customer adviser or one of our sales partners. They are also able to tell you which ATEX certifications are available for the Ex cable glands you need. Depending on the size of the gland and the material from which it is made, there are differences that must be taken into account during your project planning.

Our Ex solutions

We have three model series in our range that meet the various requirements Ex cable glands are required to comply with for use in potentially explosive environments. While the Ex variants of the blueglobe and UNI Dicht cable glands are each part of a comprehensive system that can be individually configured for specific explosion protection applications, among others, the LevelEx range has been designed exclusively for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

FAQ

In potentially explosive atmospheres a large number of factors such as the hazardous substances (gas, dust, vapours) and the electrical equipment present determine the potential risk of an explosion. To minimise the risk, the cable gland used must be precisely designed for these requirements.

Flour and dust in production environments in the food and pharmaceutical industries can also create potentially explosive atmospheres. If Ex cable glands with direct product contact are used in production processes, they must also be hygienic to rule out any risk of contamination.

The ignition protection type describes the design principles an electrical component must have to ensure safe operation in a specific potentially explosive atmosphere or to prevent an explosion. PFLITSCH Ex cable glands are approved for ignition protection type “e” (increased safety) to prevent sparks and excessive temperatures, for ignition protection type “d” (flameproof enclosure), which prevents the transmission of an explosion to the outside and for dust ignition protection type “Protection by enclosure tD”. Other ignition protection types include oil immersion, encapsulation and pressurised enclosure.
